Impact Investing vs. ESG Investing: Do you know the difference?

Capital for Change: Houston Women Creating Social Impact

Join this inaugural conversation! How can we harness the power of Houston women to achieve greater impact for the causes they care about?

About this Event

Why Houston Women?

Women in Houston are a driving force in philanthropy. We give BIG and have Texas-sized hearts, but research shows we can make a bigger difference.

The first and only empirical study on the charitable giving patterns of Houston women found the multiplicity of interests of Houston women donors diluted their voice and, consequently, their power to resolve the challenges they want to address.

CauseAdvance founder, LaTanya Flix, initiated this research. Drawing on the data and 20+ years of experience advising donors and leading women and girls organizations, she is gathering an incredible group of Houston leaders from giving networks, angel and impact investing, and social entrepreneurship to explore how these tools can help women strengthen their capacity to make a bigger impact.

While these approaches are growing in silos in Houston, we lack shared information on how to access and integrate them into our philanthropy, portfolios, and business models.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

Connect, brainstorm, and learn with top minds in Houston! Read presenter bios here. Local philanthropy and social impact leaders will also join us to facilitate table conversations!

Our agenda includes:

  • Charitable Giving Patterns Data Snapshot

  • Five Lightning Talks from Houston Innovators

  • Two Rounds of Table Talk

  • Q&A and Idea Exchange

Guiding questions for our conversation:

  • How can you know if your resources are supporting the very problems you seek to alleviate?

  • Why is our current charity model not enough?

  • How can you partner with others to amplify your giving?

  • How can Houston women use their financial power- philanthropic, investment, and purchasing- to give in alignment with their values?

  • How can my money do good while still providing strong returns and financial security?

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The following groups are invited. Yes, men are absolutely welcome!

  • Individual Donors and Givers

  • Wealth Advisors

  • Philanthropists

  • Foundations

  • Entrepreneurs

  • Investors

  • Trust Officers

  • People interested in giving with others

  • Impact Organizations

Reserve your seat at the table- $40 includes full breakfast.

The New ROII: Return on Impact Investing in For-Profit Social Ventures

  • Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Rice University) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) estimates the impact investing market place at $114B and growing. Individuals and institutions alike are looking for opportunities to place investment capital into businesses that do well by doing good, which allow their dollars to generate both financial and social return. Like traditional capital markets, the impact investing marketplace spans a continuum of investment opportunities ranging from early-stage angel investing to large-scale investment by institutional investors such as CalPERS and Morgan Stanley.

Impact Hub Houston and LILIE (Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Rice University) invite you to attend this panel discussion and gain a better understanding about the unique characteristics of the impact investing continuum from angel investors, venture capital investors, and institutional investors who are actively placing return-seeking investment capital into for-profit social enterprises.

Funders and investors supporting social enterprises have become increasingly sophisticated, identifying new structures and mechanisms to inject capital into an organization to support its growth and scaling. Innovation in the types of capital deployed and the ways in which it structured is allowing social enterprises the flexibility they need to more effectively scale their impact. Impact Hub Houston and LILIE (Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Rice University) will host a series of short TED-style talks from experts that explore how new financing mechanisms are expanding traditional funding models beyond traditional grants and direct equity investments.
